Blue tie dye shirt recipe

This is a cotton shirt dyed with fiber reactive procion dye, using the colors turquoise and indigo blue.

A blue tie dye shirt is hanging on a white wall after being dyed in a bin, using fiber reactive dye.

Dye Colors

1 tablespoon of turqiouse dye + 12 cups of water

1 tablespoon of indigo blue dye + 1 cup of water

Shirt and prep

This is a cotton crop top shirt, presoaked in soda ash solution. The ratio of the soda ash is mixed at 1 cup of soda ash per 1 gallon of water. The shirt was soaked and hand wrung before dyeing.

Process

12 cups of water is used to dissolve the first color, and poured into a plastic bin. The shirt is then placed into the dye and swished around until it is well mixed and saturated. It's scrunched evenly and left to sit while the next color is mixed.

1 cup of water is used to dissolve 1 teaspoon of the darker dye. This is poured at one end of the bin, near the neck of the shirt. It's lightly swished with one hand to blend it near the neck, but it's mostly poured in and left to sit. There's much more aggitation with the first color than the second color. This helps to get good color saturation, avoiding white spots, but you also get defined details with the second darker color.
