The Tinley Park Reptile Expo offers more than reptiles. Vendors sell rare houseplants, terrarium vining plants, and carnivorous plants. A great stop for collectors and plant lovers. Several vendors sell rare houseplants alongside reptiles, including terrarium starters, carnivorous species, and collector-grade foliage plants like Thai Constellations and variegated philodendrons. At the Tinley Park Reptile Expo, I always end up spending as much time looking at plants as I do reptiles. Across the three times I’ve been, I’ve found a surprising number of vendors who specialize in rare or enclosure friendly plants. Some bring small starter plants meant to thrive in amphibian or reptile tanks, while others focus on rare tropicals for collectors. The booth shown in the photo had several variegated philodendrons and monstera types, and I picked up a Thai Constellation for $25, which used to be almost impossible to find. There are also carnivorous plants, terrarium vines, and occasional orchid vendors selling from private collections. Last year, I met a woman offering rare shingling plants she’d imported and grown herself, the kind that creep up the sides of glass when the humidity is right. Even if you don’t keep reptiles, it’s worth going just for the plants. Most of the course is shaded, in the woods, and can be played on a hot day. Corky went when it was about 90 degrees, but still worth going since it was shaded. Park Admission There is an entrance fee per vehicle of $3, which you can pay for at the same time that you purchase disc golf wrist bands. Many local dog owners enjoy taking walks along the Mishawaka River walk because of the dog friendly culture. The farmer's market also attracts venders who sell dog treats and accessories. Can you take your dog to the Mishawaka Farmer's Market? After visiting last night, for the "Under the Lights" event and seeing about 30 dogs, I would say yes. The Mishawaka Market and riverwalk seem very dog friendly. I went last night and I was surprised by the sheer number of dogs present! Everywhere I looked, there was another dog. Some were even sporting their halloween costumes. While I was there, I saw a vendor selling hand crafted dog treats that were super cute. It seems like vendors even know to expect a crowd of dog owners, and cater to them. Event details This was the first time they hosted an evening market, on Saturday night, from 7-9pm. Usually, the market is on Sunday's from 10am to 2pm. See updates on their Facebook account . Fernwood Botanical Gardens features two charming model train displays, one indoors near the fern conservatory and one outside among the trees. A fun stop for families, kids, and train enthusiasts. Model trains at Fernwood Botanical Gardens There are two different train displays at Fernwood. One is inside, in the building where you buy your tickets. The other is a short walk from the entrance, on the trail. When planning my visit to Fernwood Botanical Gardens, I somehow missed the fact that they would have trains on display, not just in one place but in two! Inside the Fern Conservatory room, there are train tracks weaving in and out of the different fern displays in the visitor center that you walk through when you first arrive. Then, outside, there are even more trains, which was such a fun surprise to discover. I would have gone to Fernwood just to see the trains if I had known about them, so it was really exciting to stumble upon them. I loved the way the trains were weaving through the trees, like they were meant to be there. It didn’t feel like an artificial or commercialized setup. The whole thing looked carefully crafted with materials you would actually find in the forest. The tracks worked perfectly for the trains, but nothing felt copied or mass produced. It is the kind of display that a true train lover would appreciate, and any young kids who are train obsessed would absolutely love. I am not sure how long they run into the wintertime since snow could make things tricky, but when I visited on November 1st, the trains were still running. Leaves were falling, the air was chilly, and it was such a cozy scene. You will find the outdoor train display not too far from the main building where you check in.
