When I think of the concept of complementary colors, the first pair that comes to mind is red and green, because of the iconic Christmas combination. I don't think most people would pull that combo as their favorite, and I think it's because both colors are usually presented with the same level of intensity and saturation. If you feel turned off by a red and green combo, try having a bright red and a really desaturated green that's lighter. Let one be dominant and one be subtle. Remember, if you mix these with dye or paint, they will either turn brown or they will tone each other down, and it will no longer be perceived by the brain as very colorful. African bullfrogs typically live 15 to 20 years in captivity and fewer years in the wild. This guide explains their lifespan, growth from juvenile to adult, and what I observed at the Tinley Park Reptile Expo. African Bullfrog lifespan African bullfrogs usually live ten to fifteen years in captivity when kept with proper heat, humidity and food. Some males can reach twenty years or more, especially the large pixie frogs often seen at reptile expos. I photographed an adult male and a bin of juveniles at the Tinley Park Reptile Expo in October 2025. The vendor had a large mature bullfrog displayed in a clear container and a separate tub full of tiny, striped babies. The signage listed the adult as the father of the juveniles. The vendor was Chicago Reptile House, a regular presence at reptile expos around Chicagoland and Northern Indiana. Lifespan in Captivity and the Wild Most captive males reach 15 to 20 years with proper care. Some keepers report individuals surpassing that range, especially large males. Wild bullfrogs usually live fewer years because they spend long periods underground during dry seasons and face more environmental risks. Bullfrog Size Juvenile to Adult Juveniles are small and striped, as you can see in the photo, and they grow quickly when well fed. Adult males are massive, round bodied, and much heavier than females, often reaching several pounds. Seeing both stages side by side at Tinley Park made the size difference very clear. Their growth and longevity explain why they are considered a long term commitment in the reptile hobby. African bullfrog species name African bullfrogs are scientifically known as Pyxicephalus adspersus, often called pixie frogs in the pet trade. They are not the same a pacman frogs. The northern lights were faintly visible over Elkhart, Indiana around 10 p.m. on November 11, 2025. A long-exposure photo taken with a Canon R6 Mark II at ISO 500, f/1.4, 2.5 seconds revealed green and violet color near the horizon. Northern lights in Indiana The northern lights were faintly visible over Elkhart, Indiana around 10 pm tonight, though not bright to the naked eye. When photographed with a Canon R6 Mark II and a 24 mm f/1.4 lens at ISO 500 for 2.5 seconds, subtle bands of green and violet appeared in the sky. The aurora wasn’t visible without a camera, but a long exposure revealed color along the northern horizon. This image was taken in Elkhart, Indiana on November 12, 2025, with reflections of the lights showing in the water below the tree line. The exposure settings were ISO 500, f/1.4, 2.5 seconds, 24 mm. Temperatures were about 40 degrees. Cold, but manageable for standing outside briefly to take photos. It’s uncommon to capture the northern lights this far south, so anytime geomagnetic activity spikes, it’s worth checking the sky after dark with a camera even if it looks empty to the eye.
