- Complementary | Glossary
Colors that sit opposite each other on the color wheel, like purple and yellow. Complementary design Colors that sit opposite each other on the color wheel. When I think of the concept of complementary colors, the first pair that comes to mind is red and green, because of the iconic Christmas combination. I don't think most people would pull that combo as their favorite, and I think it's because both colors are usually presented with the same level of intensity and saturation. If you feel turned off by a red and green combo, try having a bright red and a really desaturated green that's lighter. Let one be dominant and one be subtle. Remember, if you mix these with dye or paint, they will either turn brown or they will tone each other down, and it will no longer be perceived by the brain as very colorful. So you can use that to your advantage or be aware if you don't want that to happen. Tie dye links See all glossary items See tutorials for flowy ice dye and geode tie dye .
